Authors Set for Payouts After Judge Clears $1.5B Anthropic Settlement

A federal judge approved a $1.5 billion settlement to authors who filed a landmark lawsuit in against AI giant Anthropic.

The lawsuit claimed Anthropic ripped off writers by using stolen digital copies of their books to develop LLM products.

Authors are expected to receive an estimated $3,000 payment for each stolen work (it’s also worth noting that attorneys in the case stand to receive $101.5 million in court-awarded fees—less than the $187.5 million they requested).

The settlement accounts for 440,490 stolen works, according to recent court filings. Under the agreement, Anthropic will be required to destroy the pirated material.
